When I first learned about “Soul Surfer” the movie, I knew that I wanted to see it. I always like to watch movies that promise a Christ-centered theme. But to be honest, I was not expecting much more than a good, wholesome, clean movie. Even with the glowing reviews by others, I had a bit of healthy skepticism. This is because so many other recent “Christian” movies fell short by being either cinematic flops (aka boring or allowing it to be tainted by some non- or even anti-Christian scenes or messages. Or they often turn out to be overly sentimental dramas with little real substance.
We had tried to see it on the opening weekend, but circumstances to not allow that to happen. I had a feeling inside of me that the Lord had a special Easter blessing for my wife and me today through this movie. I also knew that He wanted us to wait until after I wrote the Faith Crisis article yesterday. I guess that you cannot have an Easter resurrection without first experiencing a Good Friday Crucifixion, huh?
Oh my, I am totally and pleasantly surprised! Soul Surfer is a real gem, a true diamond in an age when so many movies are worthless plastic beads. It is very well written and directed film with top-notch actors. It has a very well-developed storyline, and the overall pace is just right for the story. There is neither too much needless action nor are there any slow and drawn-out scenes.
Bur most importantly, this film is definitely imbued, or rather saturated, with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The timeless truth of God’s Word flows freely through every scene. Quite often throughout the movie, we were moved to tears because of the efficacy of the proclamation of the Word in Spirit and truth. The presence of the Lord in this film through His Holy Spirit is so strong that you cannot walk away unchanged in some way.
The firm resolve, dogged determination and fighting spirit exemplified by Bethany Hamilton are strikingly similar to my own means of victory in my own lifelong struggle with cerebral palsy. As those who know me personally will readily testify, I have never allowed my CP to limit my own potential – that is until I hit my own faith crisis. But the Lord gave me a very special Easter gift through this movie. He gave me a renewed sense of hope. Just like Bethany had no idea where her “life detour” would take her, I have no idea of what plans the Lord has for me. And like how Bethany was surprised at what she learned from her “tragedy”, I am sure that I will be just as surprised in my own epiphany, whenever and however it happens. Once again, I am reassured that the Lord will not allow the many gifts and talents that He blessed me with to go to waste.
I strongly recommend that everyone who loves the Lord watch this movie. You will NOT be disappointed, I promise. You will be encouraged, edified, and lifted up in spirit. The Lord WILL bless you with a special gift, personalized just for you. You will be changed in some way. And your love for the Lord will grow stronger and more deeply rooted. Go see this movie, now!
✝ Oh my dearest Lord Jesus, I thank You for giving me and my wife a special and much-needed blessing through the movie “Soul Surfer”. Thank you for renewing our hope, lifting our spirits, and drawing our hearts just a little closer to yours. Continue to use this anointed film to expand your Kingdom and touch souls in a mighty way. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit I pray. Amen, amen and AMEN! ✝
Jeremiah 29:11 (NAB)
For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope. When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the LORD, and I will change your lot.
